If you have been arrested please follow our DO and DO NOT steps below.

DO

  • Be polite at all times

  • Ask why you are being arrested

  • Give your name and address

  • Ask the police for a telephone so you can contact TALS

  • Tell the police if you do not think you've been treated fairly

  • Ask for bail

DO NOT

  • Do not resist arrest

  • Do not argue with or insult police

  • Do not give a statement without legal advice

  • Do not say you have been treated fairly if you feel you have not

I need a lawyer, am I eligible for TALS assistance?

TALS applies Commonwealth policy and welcomes people with Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander ancestry:

  • who self-identify as an Aboriginal person and / or Torres Strait Islander; and,

  • who are recognised as an Aboriginal person and / or Torres Strait Islander by the Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander community in which they live or have lived.
