Community Legal Education
Empowering communities through legal knowledge
Community Legal Education (CLE) provides vital information about the law to Aboriginal communities, as well as public and private schools and institutions with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander youth. CLE aims to build individual and community resilience by enhancing understanding of legal rights, responsibilities, and available support services. By raising awareness early, CLE acts as a preventative strategy, helping people avoid legal problems or address them before they escalate.
We offer two tailored approaches to Community Legal Education:
1. CLE in Community
In partnership with the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities of Tasmania, we design education programs that respond directly to community needs and legal issues.
Our Community Legal Education (CLE) programs aim to:
build awareness and understanding of the law, including how to identify, prevent, and address legal problems
increase awareness of the support available through legal and community services
CLE is delivered through interactive face-to-face sessions as well as accessible resources such as fact sheets, pamphlets, presentations, and the TALS website.
At TALS, we believe everyone should have access to clear legal information. That’s why we provide CLE programs and information sessions in metropolitan, regional, and remote locations—ensuring no community is left without vital knowledge that can make a real difference in their lives.
All of our programs and resources are culturally sensitive and easy to understand, helping participants gain practical knowledge they can confidently apply in everyday life.
2. CLE in Schools and Institutions for Youth
TALS TALKS is a series of workshops designed for primary and secondary students (Grades 4–12).
These interactive sessions focus on preventative legal education, empowering Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander youth and supporting efforts to reduce overrepresentation in the criminal justice system.
Workshops include activities, group work, and discussions to help students explore their rights and responsibilities across everyday situations.
All sessions are aligned with the Australian Curriculum and include clear learning intentions and success criteria for students and teachers.
Workshop Topics Include
